A beautiful Folk Art painting of a soldier of the Gordon Highlander Regiment. He is wearing a campaign medal for Waterloo, where the Gordon Highlanders distinguished themselves. Set in a stylised mountain landscape with a castle and a river in the background. He is muzzle loading a “Brown Bess” musket, the British Army smooth bore from 1722-1838. Painted in oil on a fielded pine panel, probably as a gift from a Highland soldier to a loved one. Scottish, circa 1820.
